Place Reminders in Karo: Get Reminded When You Arrive
Some tasks belong to a place, not a time. Save Home, the office or the warehouse in Karo, and get reminded when you get there.
Some tasks have no good time, only a good place. “Pay the electricity bill” is easy at home and impossible on the road. “Count the cement bags” can only happen at the warehouse. A reminder at 6 pm does not help if you are not there yet.
Place reminders fix that. In Karo, you save the places you go to, attach one to a task for yourself, and Karo reminds you when you arrive. They work in the Karo app on Android.
Save your places
Start with the few places where your work happens: home, the office, the warehouse, the shop, the bank. In Karo’s settings, add a place, give it a short name such as Home, Office or Warehouse, and set where it is.
Each place has its own distance: how near you must be for Karo to count you as there. A new place starts at 100 metres. You can choose 100, 150, 200 or 500 metres, or your own, anywhere from 50 metres to 1 km.
- 100 metres suits a home or a small shop.
- A bigger distance suits a large site, such as a warehouse yard or a factory, or a place where a phone finds it hard to tell exactly where it is, such as deep inside a big building.
50 metres is the smallest, because indoors a phone’s idea of where it is can be 20–50 metres out. You can change a place’s name, where it is or its distance whenever you like.
Attach a place to a task for yourself
When you give a task to yourself, choose one of your places. That is all. A repeating task for yourself can carry a place too, so the weekly stock count reminds you each time you reach the warehouse.
Place reminders are for your own tasks. A place is yours alone, so if someone else joins the task, the place comes off it.
When you arrive
When your phone comes within the distance of one of your places, Karo reminds you about the open tasks you attached to it. Tasks you have finished stay quiet.
Android asks you first whether Karo may use your location. You can change your answer at any time in your phone’s settings.
Your location stays on your phone
- Your phone works out where it is by itself, and that is never sent to Karo or to anyone else. Karo keeps no record of where you have been.
- Karo keeps only the places you save (their names, where they are and their distances), so every phone you sign in on can use them. Only you see them.
- Your phone uses location in the background only while you have open tasks with a place. When none are left, Karo stops checking.
- Delete a place at any time. Deleting your account deletes your places too.

Good ways to use place reminders
| Place | A task for yourself |
|---|---|
| Home | Pay the electricity bill |
| Office | Sign the salary cheques |
| Warehouse | Count the stock and share a photo |
| Bank | Deposit the day’s cash |
| Supplier’s shop | Collect the new rate list |
A simple rule: if a task can only be done somewhere, give it that place. If it has to be done by a certain time, give it a due date as well.
Questions
Does it work on iPhone?
The reminder rings in the Karo app on Android. On iPhone and the web you can still save places and put them on your tasks.
Can I give someone else a task with a place?
No. A place is yours, so it goes only on tasks you give yourself. For work you give other people, use a due date and time, and reminders.
